light-field reconstruction  R&D, 2017 – 2020

The research project “Plenoptic Image Capture with Standard Cameras for Extended Post-Production Functionality in Professional Video Applications” started on October 1, 2017 and explored a novel photonics technology enabling 3D scene capture using a single standard camera.

The technology investigated methods to record scenes from multiple perspectives with one camera and reconstruct a light-field image through dedicated algorithms. This approach provided precise depth information and enabled advanced post-production functionalities such as refocusing, depth-based object segmentation, and improved integration of real and synthetic elements in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Potential application areas included professional video production, gaming, medicine, architecture, and industrial training.

The project also implemented an open innovation approach that integrated user groups into the iterative R&D process, supporting knowledge exchange and facilitating the transfer of the technology into practical use.

The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the Photonics Research Germany program.
