DER SCHLAGBAUM (THE GATE)

360 fiction, 2024

Der Schlagbaum is a virtual reality experience that delves into the meaning of borders and the biases they create. Set at an abandoned checkpoint, it follows two contrasting border guards: Didot, a patriotic 18-year-old, and Hugo, a disillusioned 58-year-old. Inspired by the style of 1920s silent films and classic German expressionism, the project draws on Babelsberg’s cinematic tradition.
It was filmed in-studio using greenscreen and underwent extensive post-production and CGI work. To enhance the atmosphere, an original orchestral score was recorded specifically for the experience. The project uses VR to explore themes of division and understanding.
